A Lesson In Demographics

I was putting off a presentation for a class earlier today, and stumbled across a blog titled, You Thought We Wouldn't Notice. The people behind this brilliant site are dedicated to calling out people stealing design and art. Most recently, YTWWN took a stab at Apple, claiming they stole from my good friend Ben Gibbard and his side project The Postal Service.

Below are a series of three videos. First, and ad for the iMac Intel Core Duo. Second, the music video for Such Great Heights. Third, a split screen shot showing the haunting similarities. The entry here does a pretty swell job of explaining the similarities and why this is stealing, etc. That's not my purpose here. But I do want to flesh out why I'm so appalled...

The marketing team at Apple is filled with idiots. They must have slept through the "Target Audience" lecture in Marketing 101 or something. What are the chances that fans of independent music (i.e. - Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service) are not interested in finding alternatives to Windows?! Seriously, it's like taking the theme song to Cops and making it the jingle for Big Bob's Discount Luxury Trailers. The same people are watching. I mean, if you are going to steal, at least do it cross-genre. For instance, take some of the lines that Tony Kornheiser or Stuart Scott (pictured below) use during ESPN programming and throw them into shows on Oxygen. The same people are definitely not watching...

Cheers to you Sam, you are off to a great start on your blog. It is interesting as it is diverse. I am looking forward to the good reading the future brings.

I personally wouldn't be as bold to say that their marketing team is full of idiots - they have made some smart marketing moves in the past few years. However, this rip was an odd move. The rip here is obvious - shame on Apple for such a move. Apple normally does well in attaching themselves to 'cool' - from the sleek black/aluminum minimalist design, to iPod commercials, to the use of indie music in their commercials. Why they weren't original here has me scratching my head.

I've recently been a bit put off by Apple's recent anti-Vista campaign. Yes, Vista sucks. You don't need to say "buy Apple because Vista sucks." Make a great product and you won't need to sling mud at your competitors.

Apple's ego is getting a bit to big for this mac user.
